How Rounding Numbers Works

The Basic Idea Behind Rounding
Rounding replaces a number with a nearby value that is simpler to read or work with. To round, you pick a place to keep, look at the digit immediately to its right, and decide whether to keep the kept digit the same or bump it up by one. Everything after the kept place is then dropped or turned into zeros.
The most widely taught convention is round half up: if the deciding digit is 5 or greater, you round up, and if it is 4 or less, you round down. For example, rounding 3.7 to the nearest whole number gives 4 because the deciding digit 7 is 5 or more, while 3.4 rounds down to 3.
Rounding to a Place Value
You can round to many levels of precision. Rounding to the nearest tenth keeps one digit after the decimal point, so 2.86 becomes 2.9. Rounding to the nearest whole number drops the decimal entirely, turning 2.86 into 3. Rounding to the nearest ten looks at the ones digit, so 47 becomes 50 and 42 becomes 40.
The rule is always the same: find the place you are keeping, look one digit to the right, and apply round half up. A common trap is thinking that a long string of digits after the deciding digit matters. It does not. Only the single digit immediately to the right of your kept place decides the direction.
Rounding to Significant Figures
Significant figures count from the first non-zero digit, not from the decimal point. In the number 0.004802, the first significant figure is 4, so rounding to two significant figures gives 0.0048. Leading zeros are just placeholders and never count.
This matters in science and engineering, where the number of significant figures signals how precise a measurement is. Rounding 128,400 to two significant figures gives 130,000, because the first two significant digits are 1 and 2, and the next digit 8 rounds the 2 up to 3.
