Frequently asked questions
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time uses an average adult silent-reading speed of 225 words per minute; speaking time uses about 150 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace. Both are estimates — technical material reads slower.
How does the counter define a word?
Any sequence of characters separated by whitespace counts as a word, which matches how word processors count. Hyphenated terms like 'well-known' count as one word.
Is my text stored anywhere?
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser as you type. Your text never leaves your device and disappears when you close or clear the page.
Why does my count differ slightly from Microsoft Word?
Different tools treat edge cases like standalone numbers, symbols, and em-dashes slightly differently. Counts typically agree within a fraction of a percent on normal prose.
About this tool
The word counter gives you live statistics for any text: words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs, estimated reading time, estimated speaking time, and the most frequent keywords. Writers use it to hit essay and article targets, students check assignment limits, and marketers keep ad copy and meta descriptions inside platform limits. Paste or type — everything is counted instantly and locally in your browser, and nothing you write is saved or transmitted.
Like everything on UtilityBase, the word counter runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. It's free to use with no account required. Browse more text tools here.
