Frequently asked questions

What is Grade 1 braille?

Grade 1, or uncontracted braille, spells out every letter, number, and punctuation mark one braille cell at a time, with no shortcuts. It's how braille is first taught. Grade 2 adds contractions for common words and letter groups.

Are these real braille characters?

Yes. The output uses Unicode braille patterns, so you can copy them into documents and messages. On screen they're a visual representation, though — they aren't a substitute for physically embossed braille that can be read by touch.

How are capitals and numbers shown?

A capital sign (⠠) is placed before an uppercase letter, and a number sign (⠼) marks the start of a number, after which the letters a–j stand for the digits 1–0. This matches standard braille notation.

About this tool

The braille translator converts text into Unicode braille characters and decodes braille back into text, using Grade 1 (uncontracted) braille where each letter, digit, and common punctuation mark is spelled out one cell at a time. It adds the capital sign before uppercase letters and the number sign before digits, just as printed braille does. The braille glyphs are real Unicode characters you can copy anywhere. It's a quick reference for learning braille or transcribing short text. Everything runs in your browser.

Like most tools on UtilityBase, the braille translator runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. It's free to use with no account required. Browse more text tools here.
