Frequently asked questions

Why do my photos get cropped in the collage?

Cells use cover-fit: each photo scales to fill its cell completely and the overflow is cropped from the edges, which is what keeps grids looking clean instead of letterboxed. Put photos whose subject sits near the center into the smaller cells, and lead photos into the big cell of the 1+2 and 1+4 layouts. Swapping two photos is one click on each cell.

What size should I pick for Instagram or messaging?

Square 1:1 (2048px) covers Instagram feed posts and profile grids; 4:5 portrait fills more screen in the feed and is what most photographers post; 9:16 is stories and TikTok. The canvases here render larger than any platform requires, so the platform downscales rather than stretches — the direction you want for sharpness.

JPG or PNG for the download?

JPG, almost always — for photographic content it looks identical at a fraction of the size, and every platform re-compresses to JPG-like formats anyway. PNG matters only if you need exact pixels (screenshots in cells, flat graphics) or plan further editing. If the JPG is still too big for a group chat, the image compressor squeezes it further.

Is there a before/after layout?

The two side-by-side layout is exactly that — the standard format for cleaning results, renovations, and progress photos. Set spacing around 8–12px with a white background for the classic look. Resellers photographing restored items: shoot both photos from the same angle and distance, and the comparison sells itself.

About this tool

The collage maker combines up to nine photos into polished layouts — side-by-sides, grids, and one-big-plus-several arrangements — with adjustable spacing, background color, rounded corners, and canvas shapes sized for Instagram squares, portraits, stories, and wide posts. Photos are cover-cropped to fill their cells; click any two cells to swap which photo goes where. Everything composes on a local canvas at full output resolution (up to 2560px), so personal photos never touch a server — the main reason to use this over app-store collage apps that bundle accounts and uploads. Download as JPG for sharing or PNG for exact pixels.

Like most tools on UtilityBase, the collage maker runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. It's free to use with no account required. Browse more image tools here.
