Because flat maps lie about a sphere. The standard Mercator projection stretches high latitudes enormously, so the genuinely shortest path between distant cities — the great circle this calculator measures — appears as an arc bulging toward the pole: Boston–Tokyo's straight line passes near Alaska; New York–Madrid arcs over the Atlantic's north. Stretch a string between two points on a globe and you'll see the same curve. Airlines fly approximately these routes (adjusted for winds and airspace), which is why transpolar flights exist at all.

Typically 15–40%, with the spread driven by geography: dense highway grids between major cities run near the low end (US interstate pairs often land around 15–25% over), while mountains, coastlines, and water crossings push it high — and islands or fjord country can make driving distance a multiple of the crow's flight. A workable planning heuristic: multiply the straight-line miles by 1.25 for a highway-connected pair, then let an actual routing map do the real work. This number's honest job is scale — 'are these places 200 or 600 miles apart' — not turn-by-turn truth.

Within roughly half an hour for typical nonstops: it assumes ~530 mph cruise plus 45 minutes of climb, descent, and routing overhead. What it can't see: winds — the jet stream makes eastbound transatlantic crossings about an hour faster than their westbound returns, the single biggest systematic error; airport taxi and holding time; and indirect routings around weather or airspace. Scheduled block times you'll see when booking also include airline padding. For 'is this a 3-hour or an 8-hour flight,' it answers well; for connections math, check real schedules.

One minute of latitude — 1.852 km, about 1.15 land miles — which makes it the navigation-native unit: on any chart, distance in nautical miles reads directly off the latitude scale, no conversion. Speed in nautical miles per hour is a knot, so a ship making 20 knots covers 20 minutes of latitude in an hour, and the geometry of plotting positions stays clean. It survives in aviation and shipping for the same reason feet survive in altitude: the entire global infrastructure — charts, ATC phraseology, regulations — speaks it. For everyone else, the miles and kilometers are right there.
