Frequently asked questions

How do I make a beat?

Click cells in the grid to program hits — each click cycles a step off, on, or accented (louder). Each row is a drum sound and every four steps is one beat. Press play (or the space bar) to loop it, and use the tempo and swing sliders to shape the feel. Prefer to start fast? Load a genre preset or hit Random.

What's the difference between the 808 and 909 kits?

They emulate two legendary Roland drum machines. The TR-808 is known for a deep, booming sub-kick with a long tail and a snappy, tonal snare — the sound of hip-hop and trap. The TR-909 is punchier and brighter, with a clicky attack on the kick and noisier hats and snare — the backbone of house and techno. Classic is a clean, general-purpose set. Switch kits anytime; your pattern stays put.

Can I download or share my beat?

Both. Click Export WAV to render your loop (two bars) offline as an uncompressed WAV that respects your kit, tempo, swing, accents, and per-track volumes — ready for any DAW. Or click Share link to copy a URL that encodes your whole pattern, so anyone who opens it hears exactly your beat.

About this tool

The drum machine is a step sequencer for building beats in your browser, with a nine-piece kit — kick, snare, clap, closed and open hats, two toms, rim, and cowbell — all synthesized live with the Web Audio API. Switch between Classic, 808, and 909 kits for different character: the 808's booming sustained sub-kick, the 909's punchy click, or the general-purpose Classic set. Choose an 8-, 16-, or 32-step pattern, click a cell to cycle it off, on, or accented (louder), and press play. A sample-accurate lookahead scheduler keeps the timing tight, a swing control shuffles the off-beats for groove, and each track has its own volume and mute. Start from a genre preset (house, boom bap, trap, rock) or hit Random, share your beat as a link, then export the loop as a WAV to drop into any DAW. No account, no watermark — everything runs in your browser.

Like most tools on UtilityBase, the drum machine runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. It's free to use with no account required. Browse more productivity tools here.
