Frequently asked questions

How do you convert a fraction to a decimal?

Divide the numerator by the denominator. For 3/8, that is 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375. When the division doesn't end, the digits repeat — 1/3 is 0.333… — and this tool marks the repeating part in parentheses as 0.(3).

What is a repeating decimal?

A repeating decimal is one where a digit or block of digits recurs forever, like 0.8333… for 5/6. It happens when the denominator has prime factors other than 2 and 5. The converter detects the cycle and shows it as 0.8(3).

Can it convert a decimal back to a fraction?

Yes. Switch to the Decimal → Fraction tab, enter a terminating decimal like 0.75, and it returns the reduced fraction — 3/4 — along with the unreduced form. Repeating decimals typed as digits are approximated by the digits you enter.

About this tool

The fraction to decimal converter divides the numerator by the denominator to give the exact decimal, and shows the long division one digit at a time so you can follow the work. It automatically detects repeating decimals — 1/3 becomes 0.(3) and 5/6 becomes 0.8(3), with the recurring digits marked in parentheses — and labels each result as terminating or repeating. It also converts decimals back to fractions in lowest terms. Mixed numbers and negatives are supported, and everything is computed in your browser.

Like most tools on UtilityBase, the fraction to decimal converter runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. It's free to use with no account required. Browse more calculators here.
