Mbps to MB/s Converter

Because there are 8 bits in a byte. Internet speed is measured in megabits per second (Mbps), while file sizes and download managers use megabytes per second (MB/s). Dividing megabits by 8 gives megabytes, so 100 Mbps equals 12.5 MB/s. The lowercase b means bits; the uppercase B means bytes.

Decimal, matching how ISPs sell connections: 1 kbps is 1,000 bits per second, 1 Mbps is 1,000,000. Storage is sometimes measured in binary (1 KiB = 1,024 bytes), which is a separate convention. For internet speed the decimal definition is standard and is what this converter uses.

The conversion gives the theoretical maximum. Real transfers lose 10-20% to protocol overhead, server-side limits, Wi-Fi, and network congestion. The converted MB/s is the ceiling; expect actual speeds a bit below it, and much lower if a server is throttling or your Wi-Fi is weak.
