PDF Watermark

Stamp CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, or any text across PDF pages — locally, free.

Updated July 9, 2026

How to use the pdf watermark

  1. 1Choose a PDF — it loads locally.
  2. 2Type the watermark text and pick diagonal, tiled, or footer.
  3. 3Tune opacity and size; use red for DRAFT/VOID stamps.
  4. 4Stamp, check the page-one preview, and download.

Common uses

  • Marking a proposal CONFIDENTIAL before sending it out
  • Stamping DRAFT on work-in-progress reports
  • Tiling your name across a portfolio PDF to deter reposting
  • Adding 'Prepared for [client]' footers to deliverables

Frequently asked questions

Which placement should I use?

Diagonal center is the convention for status labels — CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, SAMPLE — readable at a glance without burying the content. Tiled repeats the text across the page and is the deterrent choice for documents you expect people to screenshot or re-share, since cropping can't remove it. Footer is for attribution that shouldn't shout: a name, date, or 'Prepared for X'.

What opacity works best?

15–20% for diagonal and tiled marks — clearly visible without fighting the text under it. Go lighter (8–12%) on dense text documents, heavier (25%+) on image-heavy pages where a faint mark disappears. The footer placement enforces a readable minimum since a ghost footer serves no one.

Can a watermark be removed?

By a determined person with PDF editing tools, yes — the watermark is a drawing operation in the page content, and content can be edited. That's true of watermarks from Acrobat too. It reliably deters casual re-sharing and survives print/scan cycles, which is what watermarks are actually for; genuinely sensitive content needs redaction or access control, not a stamp.

Does watermarking change the document's text or quality?

No — the original content is untouched and stays selectable; the watermark is drawn as an additional layer on each page. File size grows only trivially (it's just text drawing commands plus one embedded font).

About this tool

The PDF watermark tool stamps text across every page of a document: a classic diagonal CONFIDENTIAL through the center, a repeating tiled pattern that's hard to crop out, or a discreet bottom footer. Opacity, size, and a red variant for DRAFT/VOID stamps are adjustable, and a rendered preview of page one shows the result before you download. The watermark is drawn into the page content itself — it survives printing, re-saving, and casual screenshots. Honest scope note: any watermark can be removed by someone determined with the right tools, so treat it as labeling and deterrence, not security. Everything runs in your browser; the document is never uploaded.

Like most tools on UtilityBase, the pdf watermark runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. It's free to use with no account required. Browse more productivity tools here.
