How to Calculate Your Life Path Number

Learn how to calculate your numerology life path number from your birth date, including how master numbers work.

What a Life Path Number Is

In numerology, your life path number is a single digit (or a master number) derived from your date of birth. Practitioners treat it as the most important number in your chart, said to describe your natural strengths and the general direction of your life.

It's a belief system rather than science, so there's no evidence it predicts anything. People use it for fun, reflection, and as a lens for thinking about themselves — which is the spirit to approach it in.

The Calculation

Reduce each part of your birth date to a single digit, then add those together and reduce once more. 'Reducing' means adding the digits of a number until one digit is left.

  1. 1Reduce your birth month to a single digit (December, 12, becomes 1 + 2 = 3).
  2. 2Reduce your birth day the same way (the 25th becomes 2 + 5 = 7).
  3. 3Reduce your birth year by adding all its digits (1990 becomes 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1).
  4. 4Add the three reduced numbers together.
  5. 5Reduce that sum to a single digit — unless it's a master number.

Master Numbers

There's one exception to reducing: the numbers 11, 22, and 33 are called master numbers and are left as they are rather than reduced to 2, 4, or 6. If any step or the final total lands on one of them, you keep it.

For example, a birth day of the 29th reduces to 2 + 9 = 11, which stays 11. The calculator applies this rule automatically and shows the full reduction so you can see exactly how your number was reached.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my life path number?

Reduce your birth month, day, and year each to a single digit, add the three results, and reduce again to one digit. The exceptions are the master numbers 11, 22, and 33, which are kept as-is.

What are master numbers in numerology?

They are 11, 22, and 33 — numbers considered especially significant, so they aren't reduced to a single digit. If a step lands on one, it stays as the master number.

Does my life path number mean anything?

Numerology is a belief system, not science, so there's no evidence a birth date shapes personality or destiny. Treat your life path number as a bit of fun and self-reflection rather than a prediction.
