How to Convert Millimeters to Inches

One inch equals exactly 25.4 millimeters, which follows directly from the fact that an inch is 2.54 centimeters and a centimeter is ten millimeters. Like the centimeter definition, this is exact, so millimeter and inch measurements convert perfectly as long as you carry enough decimal places.

To convert millimeters to inches you divide by 25.4. To go from inches to millimeters you multiply by 25.4. A 50 mm bolt is 50 divided by 25.4, or about 1.97 inches, just under two inches. Because millimeters are small, they are the natural unit for precise measurements where fractions of an inch get awkward.

Hardware and lumber in inch countries are usually sold in fractions like one eighth or three sixteenths rather than decimals. To turn a decimal inch into a fraction, multiply the part after the decimal point by the denominator you want, such as 16, then round to the nearest whole number over that denominator.
