Frequently asked questions
Why does an online ruler need calibration?
Browsers assume a nominal 96 pixels per inch, but real displays range from ~90 to 500+ physical PPI, and the OS scaling factor sits in between. Without calibration the ruler is only roughly right; with the card calibration it's accurate to about a millimeter.
Why a bank card specifically?
Every payment and ID card follows ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1: exactly 85.60 × 53.98 mm. It's a precision reference object that's already in your pocket — credit, debit, gift, or ID card all work identically.
Do I have to recalibrate every visit?
No — the calibration is saved in your browser's local storage for this device. Recalibrate only on a different screen, after changing display scaling, or if you clear site data.
How should I measure small objects?
Hold the object flat against the screen aligned with the ruler's zero line, and read at eye level to avoid parallax. It's ideal for coins, cards, jewelry, screws, and phone-sized items; for anything longer than the ruler, a tape measure wins.
About this tool
The online ruler draws a measuring scale on your screen in centimeters or inches — with the calibration step that separates a real measuring tool from a decoration. Screens report a nominal ~96 CSS pixels per inch regardless of their true pixel density, so an uncalibrated on-screen ruler can be off by 20% or more. The fix takes twenty seconds: hold any standard bank or ID card (they're all exactly 85.6 mm wide, by ISO spec) against the calibration box and drag the slider until they match. The setting is remembered locally for this screen, after which measurements are genuinely accurate. Millimeter ticks in metric mode, sixteenths in inches.
Like everything on UtilityBase, the online ruler runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. It's free to use with no account required. Browse more screen tools here.
