Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a dead pixel and a stuck pixel?
A dead pixel receives no power and appears black on every background color. A stuck pixel has one or more subpixels frozen on, so it glows red, green, blue, or a mix regardless of what the screen shows. Stuck pixels sometimes recover; dead pixels generally do not.
How do I run the test?
Enter fullscreen, clean the screen first so dust isn't mistaken for a defect, then step through each solid color while scanning the whole panel. Look for dots that don't match the background.
Can stuck pixels be fixed?
Sometimes. Rapidly cycling colors over the affected area for several minutes can nudge a stuck subpixel back to life. Results vary, and gently massaging the spot through a soft cloth is sometimes suggested — do this at your own risk on LCDs only.
How many dead pixels justify a warranty claim?
It depends on the manufacturer's pixel policy. Many allow a small number of defective pixels before a panel qualifies for replacement, while premium 'zero bright dot' warranties cover even a single stuck pixel. Check your model's policy.
About this tool
The dead pixel test cycles your display through solid white, black, red, green, and blue so faulty pixels stand out against each background. A dead pixel stays dark on every color; a stuck pixel glows in one color regardless of the background. Use the arrow keys or tap to change colors manually, or enable auto-cycle to step through the sequence hands-free while you scan the panel. Running this test before a return or warranty window closes takes under a minute and can save an expensive mistake when buying a used monitor, laptop, or phone.
Like everything on UtilityBase, the dead pixel test runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. It's free to use with no account required. Browse more screen tools here.
