Frequently asked questions
Why is my viewport smaller than my screen resolution?
The viewport is only the area your browser page occupies — it excludes the browser's own toolbars, the operating system taskbar, and any window borders. A maximized window is still slightly smaller than the full screen resolution.
What is device pixel ratio?
Device pixel ratio (DPR) is how many physical pixels represent one CSS pixel. A DPR of 2 means a 'Retina'-class display: a reported 1440×900 viewport is actually rendered with 2880×1800 physical pixels.
Why does the tool show a different resolution than my monitor's native spec?
Operating system display scaling changes the reported resolution. At 150% scaling, a 2880-pixel-wide panel reports 1920 CSS pixels. Multiply the reported width by the device pixel ratio to recover the physical resolution.
Does rotating my phone change the values?
Yes. Width and height swap and the orientation reading updates immediately — the tool listens for resize and orientation events.
About this tool
The screen resolution checker reads what your device reports about its own display: the full screen resolution, the available area minus taskbars, your browser viewport size, the device pixel ratio (which reveals HiDPI/Retina scaling), color depth, and orientation. The values update live as you resize the window or rotate the device, which makes it handy for web developers checking breakpoints, support teams confirming a user's actual setup, and anyone verifying that a monitor runs at its native resolution.
Like everything on UtilityBase, the screen resolution checker runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. It's free to use with no account required. Browse more screen tools here.
