Frequently asked questions

Is my recording uploaded anywhere?

No. The Whisper AI model runs inside your browser — GPU-accelerated where available — so the audio is processed entirely on your device. The only thing downloaded is the model itself (about 40–80 MB, once; your browser caches it). That's the whole point: meetings, interviews, and medical or legal recordings are exactly the audio you don't want on someone's server.

How accurate is it, and what languages work?

It uses OpenAI's open-source Whisper model. For clear speech it's very good; heavy accents, background noise, and people talking over each other reduce accuracy, as with any transcription. The fast model is English-only; the multilingual model covers roughly 100 languages with auto-detect. For maximum accuracy on difficult audio, dedicated paid services with bigger models still have an edge.

Can it make subtitles for videos?

Yes — drop in the video file itself (MP4/WebM audio tracks decode directly) and export the transcript as SRT or VTT, the two standard subtitle formats accepted by YouTube, Premiere, DaVinci, and most players. Timestamps come straight from the model, and you can also copy or download the plain text.

About this tool

Turn any recording into text with AI — free, unlimited, and private. Drop in an audio file or video (meeting, lecture, interview, voice memo) and OpenAI's open-source Whisper model transcribes it with timestamps, right in your browser: GPU-accelerated where available, and your file is never uploaded anywhere. The only download is the AI model itself — once, then it's cached. Choose the fast English model or a multilingual one covering ~100 languages, then copy the transcript or export plain text, SRT, or VTT subtitle files ready for YouTube, Premiere, or any video editor. Unlike cloud transcription services there's no per-minute pricing, no length caps, and no account — which matters most for exactly the recordings people transcribe: private meetings, medical notes, and interviews.

The audio to text connects to an external service to fetch live data, so some of what you enter is sent over the network to provide the result — see the note in the tool for specifics. We don't require an account, and we don't store your queries. Most tools on UtilityBase run entirely in your browser; this one needs the network to do its job. Browse more productivity tools here.
