Frequently asked questions

Is my recording uploaded to a server?

No — this is the whole point. Audio is captured and held in your browser's memory with the MediaRecorder API. Nothing touches a server, and closing the tab permanently discards anything you didn't download.

What format is the downloaded file?

Your browser's native recording format: WebM (Opus audio) on Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, or M4A on Safari. Both play everywhere modern and import into any DAW or editor; if you specifically need MP3 or WAV, convert the file afterwards.

How long can I record?

There's no artificial limit — recordings are bounded only by available memory, and compressed voice audio is small (roughly a megabyte per minute). Hour-plus recordings are fine on any modern machine.

The recording is silent or very quiet. What's wrong?

Check that the browser is using the right microphone (OS default), raise the input gain in your system's sound settings, and make sure another app isn't holding the mic. The microphone tester on this site shows a live level meter — if it moves there, recording will work here.

About this tool

The voice recorder captures audio from any microphone directly in your browser, with a live timer, instant playback, and one-click download of each take. Unlike most 'online recorders,' nothing is ever uploaded — recording happens with the MediaRecorder API and clips exist only in the tab's memory until you download them, which makes it safe for sensitive voice memos, lecture snippets, and interview notes. Record multiple takes back to back, replay them side by side, keep the good one, and delete the rest. Files download in your browser's native format (WebM on Chrome/Edge/Firefox, M4A on Safari), which every modern player and DAW opens.

Like everything on UtilityBase, the voice recorder runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. It's free to use with no account required. Browse more productivity tools here.
