Frequently asked questions
Is my voice recorded or uploaded?
No. The browser analyzes the audio stream locally to draw the level meter. Nothing is recorded, saved, or sent to any server, and the microphone is released as soon as you stop the test.
The meter doesn't move when I speak. What's wrong?
Check that the correct input device is selected in the tool and in your operating system, that the mic isn't hardware-muted (many headsets have a mute switch), and that input volume isn't set to zero in system sound settings.
Why did my browser block the microphone?
If permission was previously denied, the browser remembers it. Click the padlock or permissions icon in the address bar, allow microphone access for this site, and reload the page.
Can I pick between my headset and built-in mic?
Yes. After you grant permission, the device menu lists all available inputs. Switch between them to compare levels — the meter restarts with the newly selected device.
About this tool
The microphone tester shows a live input level meter for any connected microphone, so you can confirm your mic works before a call, interview, or recording session. Select between multiple input devices where your browser supports it, speak, and watch the meter respond in real time. The audio stream is analyzed entirely inside your browser to draw the meter — it is never recorded, stored, or transmitted, and the stream stops the moment you press stop or leave the page.
Like everything on UtilityBase, the microphone tester runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. It's free to use with no account required. Browse more device tests here.
