Frequently asked questions
Is my camera footage recorded or uploaded?
No. The preview is rendered directly from your camera to your screen inside the browser. No frames are stored or transmitted; snapshots are generated locally and download straight to your device.
Why is my preview mirrored?
Most video apps mirror your self-view because it matches what you see in a mirror, while other participants see you un-mirrored. Use the mirror toggle to preview both versions.
The preview is black or says the camera is in use. What now?
Another application probably has exclusive access to the camera — close video apps like Zoom or Teams and retry. Also check that the browser has camera permission and that any physical privacy shutter is open.
Can I test an external camera?
Yes. After granting permission, all connected cameras appear in the device menu. Select the external camera to switch the preview to it.
About this tool
The webcam tester shows a live preview of your camera so you can check framing, focus, exposure, and lighting before joining a call. Switch between multiple cameras, mirror the image to match how video apps display you, go fullscreen for a detailed look, and download a snapshot to compare lighting setups. The video stream stays entirely inside your browser: nothing is recorded, stored, or transmitted, and the camera light turns off the moment you stop the test.
Like everything on UtilityBase, the webcam tester runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. It's free to use with no account required. Browse more device tests here.
