Frequently asked questions

How do I split a bill with tip?

Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. For an $80 bill with 18% tip split four ways: the tip is $14.40, the total is $94.40, and each person pays $23.60. This tool does that instantly and lets you switch tip percentages with one tap.

Should tip be on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Both are common. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, while tipping on the full total is generous and simpler. This tool applies your tip percentage to whatever bill figure you enter, so use the pre-tax subtotal if you prefer that convention.

What's a standard tip in the US?

For table service, 18 to 20% is standard, 15% for adequate service, and more for excellent. Counter service and takeout are optional or lower. Norms differ by country — in many places service is included and tipping is minimal or unexpected.

About this tool

The bill splitter divides a restaurant or group bill — including tip — evenly among any number of people. Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage (with quick 15/18/20/25% buttons), and the number splitting it, and it shows what each person pays plus the tip amount and grand total. Tip is calculated on the bill you enter, the standard approach for table service. It's the fast way to end the check-time math and awkward rounding. Everything is calculated in your browser.

Like most tools on UtilityBase, the bill splitter runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. It's free to use with no account required. Browse more calculators here.
