Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip in the US?

Sit-down restaurants: 15% is baseline, 18–20% standard for good service, more for exceptional. Bartenders: $1–2 per drink or 20% of the tab. Delivery: 15–20% with a reasonable minimum. Counter service and takeout are genuinely discretionary despite what the tablet suggests.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Convention says pre-tax — you're tipping on the service, not the government's cut. In practice the difference is small (a 20% tip on tax adds ~1.6% in a typical state), and many people tip on the total for simplicity. Either is defensible.

How does the round-up option work?

It raises the total to the nearest amount that divides evenly into whole dollars per person, then shows the effective tip percentage that produced. Four people owing $23.47 each becomes four people owing $24 — worth the extra cents every time.

What about parties with automatic gratuity?

Many restaurants add 18–20% automatically for groups of 6–8+. Check the bill before tipping — the line is usually labeled 'gratuity' or 'service charge' — so you don't double-tip unless the service earned it.

About this tool

The tip calculator works out the tip, total, and per-person share in one glance: enter the bill, tap a preset (15/18/20/25%) or type any percentage, and set how many ways to split. The round-up option is the detail that matters at a real table — it nudges the total so each person pays a whole-dollar amount, showing the effective tip percentage the rounding produced, which is always easier than collecting $23.47 from four people. Standard US guidance is built into the notes: 15% baseline, 18–20% for good service, tip on pre-tax if you're being precise.

Like everything on UtilityBase, the tip calculator runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. It's free to use with no account required. Browse more calculators here.
