Data Storage Converter

Convert between bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB, and PB — with binary and decimal modes.

Updated July 13, 2026

How to use the data storage converter

  1. 1Enter an amount and choose its unit.
  2. 2Pick binary (×1024) or decimal (×1000).
  3. 3Read the equivalent in every other unit.
  4. 4Switch modes to match your OS or a drive spec.

Common uses

  • Understanding why a drive shows less than advertised
  • Converting a file size between MB and GB
  • Planning storage or backup capacity
  • Reading a spec sheet in the other convention

Frequently asked questions

Is 1 GB equal to 1000 MB or 1024 MB?

Both conventions exist. Operating systems like Windows count in binary (1 GB = 1024 MB), while drive manufacturers and networks count in decimal (1 GB = 1000 MB). Strictly, the binary units should be called GiB/MiB. Use the toggle to match whichever context you're in.

Why does my 1 TB drive show as 931 GB?

The manufacturer sells it as 1 TB using decimal units (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes), but your OS displays it in binary, dividing by 1024 three times, which gives about 931 GiB. No storage is missing — it's just two different ways of counting the same bytes.

What about bits versus bytes?

This tool converts bytes (storage). Internet speeds are usually measured in bits — and 1 byte = 8 bits — so a 100 Mbps connection is about 12.5 MB per second. For bandwidth conversions, use a bits-based tool instead.

About this tool

The data storage converter switches an amount between bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB, and PB at once. Crucially, it lets you pick binary (×1024, what your operating system reports) or decimal (×1000, what drive makers and networks use) — the mismatch is exactly why a '1 TB' drive shows as about 931 GB in Windows. Enter a value in any unit and every other unit updates. Everything runs in your browser.

Like most tools on UtilityBase, the data storage converter runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. It's free to use with no account required. Browse more developer tools here.
