Frequently asked questions

How do you convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?

Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature, then multiply by 5/9. For example, 98.6°F − 32 = 66.6, × 5/9 ≈ 37°C. To go the other way, multiply Celsius by 9/5 and add 32.

What's a quick mental estimate?

For a rough Fahrenheit-to-Celsius guess, subtract 30 and halve it (70°F → about 20°C). It's not exact — the real factor is 5/9, not 1/2 — but it's close enough for weather. This tool gives the precise answer.

Why is −40° special?

−40°F and −40°C are the same temperature — it's the one point where the two scales cross. Below it, Celsius reads higher than Fahrenheit; above it, Fahrenheit reads higher. It's a handy sanity check for any conversion tool.

About this tool

The Fahrenheit to Celsius converter turns any temperature from °F to °C — and back — as you type. Celsius is Fahrenheit minus 32, times 5/9; Fahrenheit is Celsius times 9/5, plus 32. The 32-degree offset trips people up because the scales place freezing differently (32°F = 0°C), while one Celsius degree equals 1.8 Fahrenheit degrees. A reference table lists the temperatures people actually look up — body temperature, oven settings, freezing and boiling — and −40° is the point where both scales read the same. Edit either box to convert both directions. Everything runs in your browser.

Like most tools on UtilityBase, the fahrenheit to celsius runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. It's free to use with no account required. Browse more calculators here.
