  • Working out the effective weight math for category-based syllabi

Frequently asked questions

How is the required final score calculated?

Course grade = current grade × (1 − final weight) + final score × final weight. Solving for the final score: required = (desired − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. A 20%-weighted final means your current grade contributes the other 80%.

It says I need more than 100%. Now what?

The target is mathematically out of reach on the final alone. The calculator shows the best grade you can still finish with — aim there, and check the syllabus for extra credit, dropped assignments, or rounding policies that might bridge the gap.

It says I need a negative score. Am I safe?

Yes — your current grade is high enough that even a zero on the final keeps you at or above the target. Don't actually skip the exam though: some syllabi have must-take-the-final rules that override the math.

What if my class uses category weights instead of one final weight?

Find the final's true share of the total: if exams are 40% of the course and the final is half the exam category, the final's effective weight is 20%. Enter that effective weight here.

About this tool

The final grade calculator answers the question every student asks in December and May: what do I need on the final? Enter your current grade, the final's weight from the syllabus, and the grade you want, and it solves for the required exam score — with honest context: whether the target is locked in already, comfortably reachable, demanding, or mathematically impossible (and if it's impossible, the best grade you can still finish with). The formula is shown so you can verify it: required = (desired − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. Works for any weighted final, midterm, or single remaining assignment.

Like everything on UtilityBase, the final grade calculator runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. It's free to use with no account required. Browse more calculators here.
