Frequently asked questions
How do I know my scroll wheel is failing?
The signs are scrolling that jumps or skips, occasionally moves the opposite way from how you turned the wheel, or scrolls when you aren't touching it. This test counts events and shows direction so you can see those faults directly rather than guessing during normal use.
What causes scroll wheel problems?
Usually a worn optical or mechanical scroll encoder, or dust and debris in the wheel mechanism. Erratic scrolling can sometimes be improved by cleaning around the wheel; a genuinely worn encoder needs replacement. Software or driver issues can also cause it, so test on another device to isolate the cause.
Why is horizontal scroll detected?
Some mice have a tilt wheel and many trackpads support two-finger horizontal swipes, both of which send horizontal scroll events. The test flags them so you can confirm that feature works — or notice unwanted horizontal input.
About this tool
The mouse scroll test checks whether your scroll wheel registers cleanly. Hover the target and scroll: it counts wheel events, shows the direction, tallies up versus down, and detects horizontal scrolling from a tilt wheel or trackpad. A healthy wheel reports every notch one-for-one in the direction you turn it; a worn scroll encoder skips notches, occasionally reverses, or fires phantom events when untouched. Everything is measured locally in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
Like most tools on UtilityBase, the mouse scroll test runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. It's free to use with no account required. Browse more device tests here.
