PPI Calculator
Find a screen's pixel density (PPI) from its resolution and diagonal size.
Updated July 10, 2026
How to use the ppi calculator
- 1Enter the horizontal and vertical resolution in pixels.
- 2Enter the diagonal screen size in inches.
- 3Read the pixel density in PPI.
- 4Check dot pitch and megapixels too.
Common uses
- Comparing sharpness between two monitors
- Checking if a screen is retina-sharp at your distance
- Matching pixel density across a multi-monitor setup
- Understanding a display's dot pitch spec
Frequently asked questions
How is PPI calculated?
Take the diagonal resolution in pixels — the square root of width squared plus height squared — and divide by the diagonal screen size in inches. For 1920×1080 on a 24-inch monitor that's about 2203 diagonal pixels divided by 24, roughly 92 PPI.
What PPI counts as sharp?
It depends on viewing distance. Phones held close want roughly 300+ PPI to look retina-sharp, tablets around 260, and desktop monitors viewed at arm's length look clean around 90 to 110. Higher is sharper, but the benefit shrinks once pixels are too small to see at your distance.
Is PPI the same as DPI?
In everyday use they're used interchangeably for screens, though strictly DPI (dots per inch) refers to printing. For displays, pixels per inch is the correct term, and it's what this tool calculates from resolution and size.
About this tool
The PPI calculator finds a display's pixel density — pixels per inch — from its resolution and diagonal size, the number that determines how sharp it looks. It's the diagonal resolution in pixels divided by the diagonal in inches, so the same 1080p resolution is razor-sharp on a phone and coarse on a large monitor. It also gives the dot pitch (the physical size of one pixel) and total megapixels. Use it to compare monitors, judge whether a screen looks retina-sharp, or match density across displays. All math runs in your browser.
Like most tools on UtilityBase, the ppi calculator runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. It's free to use with no account required. Browse more calculators here.
