How is PPI calculated?
Take the diagonal resolution in pixels — the square root of width squared plus height squared — and divide by the diagonal screen size in inches. For 1920×1080 on a 24-inch monitor that's about 2203 diagonal pixels divided by 24, roughly 92 PPI.
What PPI counts as sharp?
It depends on viewing distance. Phones held close want roughly 300+ PPI to look retina-sharp, tablets around 260, and desktop monitors viewed at arm's length look clean around 90 to 110. Higher is sharper, but the benefit shrinks once pixels are too small to see at your distance.
Is PPI the same as DPI?
In everyday use they're used interchangeably for screens, though strictly DPI (dots per inch) refers to printing. For displays, pixels per inch is the correct term, and it's what this tool calculates from resolution and size.
