How to Test a Microphone Online
Check that your mic actually works before the meeting starts — and what to fix when the level meter stays flat.
The 30-second test
A browser-based mic test shows a live input level meter: if the meter moves when you speak, the entire chain — hardware, drivers, OS settings, browser permission — is working. That's a stronger check than an app's settings page, because it exercises the same path a real call uses.
Importantly, a properly built test analyzes audio locally to draw the meter and records nothing. The microphone releases as soon as you stop.
- 1Open the Microphone Tester and click Start Test.
- 2Allow microphone access when the browser asks.
- 3Speak at normal volume and watch the meter respond.
- 4If you have several mics, switch devices in the menu and compare.
When the meter doesn't move
Work down this list — it resolves the overwhelming majority of silent-mic cases. First, hardware mute: most headsets have a physical mute switch or a boom arm that mutes when flipped up. Second, the wrong input device: your OS may be listening to a built-in mic while you speak into a headset, or vice versa. Third, input volume set near zero in system sound settings. Fourth, browser permission denied — check the padlock icon in the address bar. Fifth, another app holding exclusive access to the device.
If the mic works in the test but not in a specific app, the problem is that app's input device selection — check its audio settings rather than the system's.
Judging quality, not just presence
A moving meter proves signal; it doesn't prove you sound good. Watch the level while speaking normally: peaks that constantly hit the top mean clipping and distortion (lower the input gain), while a barely moving meter means you'll be quiet on calls (raise gain or get closer to the mic). Aim for peaks around two-thirds to three-quarters of the meter.
Frequently asked questions
Is an online mic test safe?
A test that processes audio locally — like the one here — never records or uploads anything. The browser permission prompt applies only to that site and can be revoked at any time.
Why is my mic quiet even at full volume?
Distance and gain. Get within 15–30 cm of the mic and raise input gain (sometimes labeled 'microphone boost') in system sound settings.
