Frequently asked questions
How much leave do service members accrue?
Active-duty members earn 2.5 days of leave per month, which is 30 days per year. It accrues monthly regardless of how much you use, so time off doesn't stop the clock — your balance is what you've earned minus what you've taken.
What is the use-or-lose cap?
You can normally carry a maximum of 60 days into the next fiscal year. Anything above 60 on 1 October is forfeited unless you have authorized Special Leave Accrual, which can temporarily raise the cap after events like a deployment. This tool flags when you're projected above 60 so you can plan leave before losing it.
Is this my official balance?
No — it's a projection. Your official, authoritative balance is on your monthly Leave and Earnings Statement (LES), which also reflects any sold leave, SLA authorization, or adjustments. Use this to plan; use your LES for the exact number.
About this tool
The military leave accrual calculator projects your leave balance forward using the standard rate of 2.5 days earned per month (30 days a year). Enter your current balance, how many months to project, and any leave you plan to take, and it shows your future balance, how much you accrue over the period, and whether you'll cross the 60-day carryover cap into use-or-lose territory. It's a planning estimate — your official balance and any Special Leave Accrual authorization are on your Leave and Earnings Statement. Runs entirely in your browser.
Like most tools on UtilityBase, the military leave accrual calculator runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. It's free to use with no account required. Browse more calculators here.
