Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the syllable count?

It uses a vowel-group heuristic — grouping adjacent vowels, dropping most silent trailing 'e's, and handling common endings — which is right for the large majority of everyday words. English spelling is irregular, so some words with silent letters, unusual endings, or names may be off by one. Treat it as a strong estimate.

How does the haiku checker work?

In haiku mode, put each line of your poem on its own row. The tool counts the syllables in each of the first three lines and compares them to the traditional 5, 7, 5 pattern, marking each line as correct or not and telling you when the whole poem fits.

Why do I get a different count than I expected?

Most disagreements come from words that a heuristic can't nail — silent 'e' that's actually pronounced (like in some names), regional pronunciation differences, or unusual spellings. For a definitive answer on a tricky word, check a dictionary, which lists the syllable breakdown.

About this tool

The syllable counter breaks your text into words and counts the syllables in each, showing a per-word breakdown and the total. Switch to haiku mode and it sums each of the first three lines and checks them against the classic 5-7-5 pattern, marking each line right or wrong as you type — handy for poets, songwriters, and students. Counting uses a vowel-group heuristic that handles the vast majority of English words; because English spelling is irregular, treat the count as a strong estimate rather than a dictionary ruling.
