Frequently asked questions

How many pages is 1,000 words?

At the academic default (12pt Times New Roman, double-spaced, 1-inch margins): about 4 pages. Single-spaced, about 2. The full quick answers: 500 words ≈ 2 pages double / 1 single; 1,500 ≈ 6 / 3; 2,500 ≈ 10 / 5.

Why do my actual documents differ from the estimate?

Real documents contain non-flowing text: headings, a title block, block quotes, citations, and paragraph breaks that leave partial lines. These typically push real page counts a bit above the estimate — pleasant news when writing toward a page minimum.

Does font choice really change page count?

Meaningfully. At the same point size, Arial sets wider than Times (fewer words per page) while Calibri sets slightly narrower. The old trick of switching fonts to stretch an essay is real — and every teacher knows it, which is why assignments increasingly specify word counts instead.

My assignment gives pages — how many words should I write?

Invert the rate shown: at double-spaced 12pt Times, multiply pages by ~250 (a 5-page paper ≈ 1,250 words). Set that as your word-count target in your editor and stop thinking about pages until formatting time.

About this tool

The words to pages calculator converts word counts into page estimates using the settings that actually determine the answer: font (Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri), size (11–13pt), and spacing (single, 1.5, double), anchored to the academic standard of US Letter with one-inch margins where double-spaced 12pt Times runs about 250 words per page. Enter a count or paste the text itself, read the page estimate and the words-per-page rate, and check the quick-reference grid for common assignment lengths. It's equally useful in reverse: a 4-page requirement at your settings becomes a concrete word target to write toward.
