Frequently asked questions

How does terminal leave work?

Terminal leave is accrued leave you use at the very end of your service, running right up to your ETS or separation date. Because you are on leave rather than working, your last working day is earlier than your ETS by roughly the number of leave days you have. You are still paid and still accrue leave during terminal leave.

How is my last working day calculated?

The tool projects your leave balance to your ETS at 2.5 days earned per month, subtracts any regular leave you plan to take and any days you sell, and counts the remaining terminal-leave days back from your ETS as calendar days. Weekends and holidays are included, since terminal leave is charged in calendar days.

Should I sell leave or take terminal leave?

Terminal leave pays your full salary, including allowances like BAH, while you are on it, whereas selling leave pays only base pay and is capped at 60 days over a career. For most people terminal leave is worth more, but selling can make sense if you want to start a civilian job right away. This estimate lets you model both.

About this tool

The terminal leave calculator finds your final working day before separation. Terminal leave is the accrued leave you take at the end of service, so your last day on the job comes before your ETS. Enter your ETS date and current leave balance, and it projects your balance forward at the standard 2.5 days earned per month, subtracts any regular leave you plan to use and any leave you sell back, then counts the remaining days back from your ETS to show your last working day. It also flags a projected balance over the 60-day carryover cap. A planning estimate: you keep accruing leave during terminal leave, and your LES, orders, and finance office are the official record. Runs entirely in your browser.
